The House of Secrets

Sarah Bennett has two secrets: she sees ghosts, and she is in love with a spy.

When Sarah takes a job with occult expert Dr Matthew Geisler, he promises to help her understand the sorrowful spirit that seems to have attached itself to her.

As Sarah struggles to cope with the ghostly presence, she runs into Zeke, the man who left her six months earlier and is recovering from injuries suffered in an alleged accident. But Zeke has secrets of his own, and when an attempt is made on Geisler’s life, Sarah finds herself caught in a struggle between the living and the dead.

Unsure who she can trust, Sarah must solve the mystery of the soul determined to haunt her, and save Dr Geisler and herself from an unknown threat.

My Review

With thanks to Rachel for providing me with an e-book copy, to review for this tour.

What a fascinating read, I enjoyed every moment! It is fast paced, no in-depth story telling, that defers from from the main story, which I also feel enables this book to be enjoyed quickly. I personally feel sometimes it is good to have a book, that you can read fairly quickly, especially if you are a steady reader, or you would like to enjoy something but have a lack of time. This book definitely provides that, with plenty to enjoy within the story!

The cover and title of the book gripped me from the beginning, the blurb only added to the excitement of what this book would provide.

When Sarah meets Dr Matthew Geisler, she has a slightly broken background, with a father she went to court against and her past affecting her future, she is struggling to move on. However, Sarah is given a job at the hospital, where she feels she is given a new start, although she knows there is more to the job than she is told.

With various ghostly visits, Sarah struggles to understand why she is being haunted, she seems to get to know who this ghost is, however she has no idea what this person wants.

With Sarah attending to her job, having ghostly visits, she also meets up with her previous love – Zeke, a man she thought she could trust, but has his own secrets he worries, may affect Sarah.

With twists along the way, hidden conversations and ghostly clues, people are hurt and warned of dangerous things about to happen, making this book full of gripping and enthralling moments, making you ask questions at every chapter.

The characters in the story are relatable and it is clear to see how things are hard at the time of the war, when rations were only provided, wives and families were awaiting news on their loved ones.

This book provides everything, from ghostly aspirations, secrets, being chased and accosted by bad men, unusual psychiatric characters, war history and how it affected people, to the detective curiosity that is created while Sarah was in the hospital.

I feel this book provided a whirlwind adventure, from start to finish this is one I would definitely recommend.
